Founded towards the end of the Second World War, the ITS focussed for many years on tracing missing persons.

Although nowadays only a small percentage of the work done is concerned with tracing, the ITS is still able to successfully answer questions about the fate of individuals.

The ITS is in possession of over 50 million references containing information about over 17.5 million persons. The material in the archives is divided into different collections.
