Magda Goebbels’ Stepfather

The picture shows a letter documenting the death of Richard Friedländer in the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.
Magda Goebbels, the wife of the Minister for Propaganda, had broken off contact with her Jewish step-father Richard Friedländer. He died as a result of the inhumane forced labor conditions he faced in the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

Magda Goebbels, the wife of the fanatic anti-Semite and Minister for Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, had a stepfather called Richard Friedländer, a German Jew. However, his prominent relative – even if only related to him by marriage – did not save his life. He was sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp in June 1938. The forced labour in the quarries of Eppenberg led to his death within a few months. According to a document in the ITS archives he died on 18 February 1939.
