“Criminal Offense: Racial Defilement”

“Criminal Offense: Racial Defilement. I hereby submit that since 1934 I was engaged to the co-defendant Maria Schniering from Essen and had the firm and serious intention to marry Miss Schniering in the future ...” This excerpt from Alfred Tobias's petition for release from protective custody illustrates one aspect of National Socialist persecution of the Jews. Sexual relations and marriages between Jews and non-Jews were forbidden as of 1935. Alfred Tobias did not survive persecution; he died in the Gross-Rosen concentration camp in October 1941. This picture was taken during an apartment search by the Gestapo and can be found in the personal file of Alfred Tobias.
