The ITS archives also hold a Kommandobuch (handbook) of the Dachau Concentration Camp. The Nazis kept penciled records of various work areas such as “Political Department“, “SS Kitchen“, “Cleaning Führerbar.“, as well as of the “Work Battalion Leaders“ and “Kapos“ in charge. A peculiar feature of the book is that the survivors continued to use it after liberation. They had received instructions from the Allies to organize for the return to an ordered civilian life and to prepare for the return of the survivors to their home countries. Entries in the English language, like “Clothing Repair“, “Central Press“ and “Jewish Committee“ now bore witness to a fundamentally different kind of registry – to care for the survivors.
