Questionnaires on death marches

Apart from the information about evacuations, police investigation reports and topographical maps, the documents at the ITS related to the death marches from concentration camps also contain information about communities from the post-war period. The Allies distributed questionnaires to town mayors in order to ascertain the routes of the marches and the number of prisoners, but also to identify the dead and the gravesites – a first insight into the local population‘s suppression of and confrontation with the past.
