SS Surgeon Aribert Heim
Between 8 October and 30 November 1941, Aribert Heim, one of the most wanted Nazi perpetrators, affixed his signature to a total of 268 surgeries registered in the record of operations at Mauthausen. His brutal surgery methods which ended the lives of innumerable concentration camp inmates brought him the epithets “Doctor Death” and “Butcher of Mauthausen”. After 1945, the Austrian lived in Germany – as a free citizen. As late as September 1962, a warrant was issued for Heim’s arrest. He was never caught, and is thought to have died in Cairo on 10 August 1992.
