No prisoners’ garb any more

The documents in the archives of the ITS also include those records that were drawn up after the liberation and tell about the loss, the trauma, the suffering and the grief, but also about the survivors’ courage and desire to start a new life. After the liberation of Concentration Camp Dachau on 29 April 1945, tens of thousands of survivors needed medical care and had to be provided with the bare necessities. On 14 May 1945 the International Prisoners Committee gave the instruction to the clothing depot to immediately stop the distribution of prisoners’ garb. This reveals how everything that had reduced human beings to prisoners, numbers, and objects of the camp administration was supposed to be stripped away by getting rid of these loathsome clothes.
